It's not often that I'm proud of my home town, but somebody in Buffalo came up with the idea to hold the first annual "World Fruitcake Eating Championship":http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20031231/1032468.asp, in Ellicott Square. If that sounds bizarre enough, consider that the city of Buffalo launched a "Fruitcake Amnesty Campaign":http://www.city-buffalo.com/news_1854.html in order to stock up on enough of the stuff for the Dec 30 contest.
So, who won? A rail-thin 105-pound Virginian woman named Sonya Thomas (her picture is above) ate ?-pound more than 405-pound Eric "Badlands" Booker of Long Island. Unbelievable.
And if this sounds like a pathetic attention-getting ploy, remember... it's for a good cause:
??The Food Bank of Western New York ? which services more than 100,000 needy people per month through 500 local food organizations ? will collect donated food for the needy during this holiday season. The Food Bank has seen hunger demand increase by a shocking 23 percent this year.??
