I'm sure a few of you remember the ever-colorful Andrew Lenkie? Well his father was running around town 20 years ago crying wolf about the houses in Amherst sinking because of those Gypsum Mines. Well, turns out he's not so crazy--but he wasn't entirely right.
Turns out houses are sinking, but it's mostly because of the weather and overdevelopment.
These houses, located roughly between Dodge and Transit, along North French, are built on top of clay. Under this clay, however, is muck. The past decade or so has seen a shitload of development and we're all aware of it and that has sucked a lot of water out of the naturally swampy area. Combine that with a couple really dry summers and, uh oh...your house is fucked.
What's happening is this muck is drying up and all of the sudden the clay will just fall in, shifting the house a couple of inches. This leaves enormous cracks in basement walls and basically destroys any value the house may have had.
Now look how has the last laugh...
